History
History courses teach students the necessary skills to evaluate and interpret complex information and recognize the importance of the past in contemporary society. These skills allow students to better understand complex political and social organizations, appreciate cultural diversity and recognize the value of an equitable society.
View Transfer Options, Degrees & CertificatesAs part of the history major, students are required to take courses in American history and world history as well as study the populations of historically underrepresented minorities. Students will have the opportunity to study with professors who specialize in political, economic, cultural, intellectual, and/or social history. Students who are interested in careers in government, public policy, journalism, law, education (K-12 and higher education), and non-profit work might consider majoring in history, as the skills learned in this discipline support skills necessary for continued graduate study or occupations related to the above areas.
Students interested in history may take a variety of courses in US, European, and world history. Additionally, courses in women's history, Californian history, and Chicanx history are offered. Students will learn about political, social, intellectual, economic, and cultural histories. In studying the historical past, students will improve their academic writing, academic literacy, and interpretation of complex information, skills which are transferable across all disciplines and careers.
Transfer Options
All of the courses in the history program at Irvine Valley College have been designed for a transfer model to area UCs, CSUs, and private colleges. Each course offered is accepted by all UC and CSUs and most of the core required courses in our local degrees articulate as major requirements in neighboring programs. The high standards and rigor of these courses will prepare students to excel in upper division history courses.
Program Specific Support
Students may enroll in a humanities and social science writing center course for support with academic writing in history. Students may also sign up for course specific tutoring in the Student Success Center.

Geography
A degree in geography can help you better understand human cultures, natural environments, and how humans interact with each other and with the natural world. Geographers use knowledge and technology, working outside in the field and on computers, to help businesses, governments, and non-profits solve problems in an increasingly complex and globalizing world.
View Transfer Options, Degrees & CertificatesJobs in the 21st century demand workers who understand the complex relationships between people, places, and environments all over the world. Geography helps us understand these relationships by examining patterns of why natural and cultural phenomena happen where they happen.
Students completing degrees in geography help governments make planning decisions, support non-profit organizations combatting environmental and humanitarian problems, aid businesses in more effectively serving their customers, and more.
Geography emphasizes learning through first-hand observation in the field and is at the forefront of important technologies like computer-based mapping and the gathering and interpretation of satellite imagery.
Program Length
Students taking 12-15 units per semester can complete a degree in geography in four semesters (plus one summer Field Studies course if desired to fulfill degree requirements; this requirement can also be fulfilled by a class taken during the Fall or Spring semesters)
Transfer Options
Many public four-year universities in California offer bachelor’s degrees in geography. Students completing associates degrees in geography can easily transfer and earn a bachelor’s degree in two more years from an institution offering geography programs, such as UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, UC Berkeley, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, San Diego State, San Francisco State, and more.

Ethnic Studies
Interested in understanding the origins of race and racism in American society? Interested in how we as a society can strive for racial and social justice for all? Ethnic Studies is the interdisciplinary study of race and ethnicity, as understood through the perspectives of major underrepresented racial groups in the United States.
View Transfer Options, Degrees & CertificatesEthnic Studies is the study of race and ethnicity with a focus on the experiences of people of color within the United States in history up to the present. By looking at the role played by race and ethnicity in American society, Ethnic Studies provides an important means to examine and contextualize what is happening right now in the United States—and why it is happening. Ethnic Studies explores race and ethnicity as categories of difference and how these categories have they been defined, constructed, and applied in different places and at different times. As a student, you will draw upon many disciplines and areas of thought to question the origin and continuity of race and racism. Through this understanding, students will recognize that progressive change is possible.

Ethnic Studies is not a degree granting program at IVC.

English
If you think English is only about grammar, think again! In English classes, you can expect to study humanity through reading and analyzing texts and through producing your own writing to develop strong skills in communication, critical thinking, and empathy--all essential for human development and hot commodities in any job market.
View Transfer Options, Degrees & CertificatesMany employers are seeking people who can think critically and express messages clearly in today’s workforce. A Literature and/or Creative Writing major will foster these skills with practice in critical thinking, analysis, expression, and exploration of diverse voices in writing. In Literature, students will gain a foundation in close reading and discussing major themes within novels, poems, plays, speeches, works of non-fiction, and other texts. In Creative Writing, students have the opportunity to study and compose primary texts, building their own portfolio of work. Studying Literature and Creative Writing often catapults individuals to careers in marketing, law, public relations, teaching, journalism, information science, and a variety of other fields.
Program Length
On average, if a student attends full time, they are able to complete these programs within two years.
Transfer Options
The English literature major at IVC offers lower-division coursework — including survey courses, genre-based courses, and specialized topics — that prepares students for the critical and literary analysis that they will engage in after transfer to a four-year institution.
The English creative writing major offers an opportunity to learn about and practice the craft of various genres--creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and screenwriting--with published writers, as well as an opportunity to experience the world of publishing through work on our literary journal, The Ear.
IVC English majors have transferred to UCs, CSUs, and private colleges such as Chapman and USC.

Are you interested in earning a bachelor’s degree in engineering at a leading university while saving tens of thousands of dollars? Enroll in the IVC Engineering Program today and follow our transfer pathway to the engineering degree of your choice while enjoying small class sizes, a highly advanced learning site, and advanced course material which has been developed with the direct assistance of our university partners.
View Transfer Options, Degrees & CertificatesThe Engineering Program allows students to prepare for university transfer while developing marketable engineering technical skills. The goal of the Engineering Program is to deliver an advanced engineering educational experience that is, in every way, equivalent to the first two years within a formal university environment. The program provides an outstanding opportunity for students seeking to minimize their time to completion and dramatically decrease the cost of their undergraduate education. The Engineering Program currently offers over ten fully transferable engineering courses which are coordinated to all major engineering disciplines. Developed in conjunction with our university partner, UC Irvine, the Engineering Program at IVC is the most effective way to reach your undergraduate engineering goals and ensure your long term success.
Program Length
- The average time to completion for our Engineering AS Degrees is approximately 4 semesters, or two years.
- The average time to completion for our Certificate of Proficiency in Pre-Engineering is approximately 3 semesters, or 18 months.
Transfer Options
The Engineering Program currently offers over ten core engineering courses which integrate almost all major engineering disciplines. The Engineering Program has been developed with the direct input of our primary university partner, UC Irvine in order to provide all required prerequisites and engineering courses for mechanical, electrical, computer, civil, chemical, materials science, and biomedical engineering transfer students. Every course within the Engineering Program maintains an active articulation agreement with multiple university partners, including UC Irvine, UC Riverside, CalPoly Pomona, and Cal State Fullerton. By completing the AS Degree, students are able to transfer with full junior status to the university of their choice and dramatically decrease the time to degree completion compared to traditional two year college transfer programs.
Program Specific Support
Students enrolled in the Engineering Program enjoy a wide array of instructional services and benefits. All classes are currently offered within the dedicated IDEA learning facility at the ATEP campus. This site provides students with access to three advanced computer labs, a full machine shop, a wide array of highly advanced pieces of equipment, counseling office, and dedicated faculty and staff members who specialize in STEM based education. Additionally, the college has one of the first dedicated transfer agreements in California through the IVC-UCI Engineering Academy and several NSF Scholarships for low income students.
