Public Health Science
The AS-T degree in Public Health Sciences offers a direct pipeline to both transfer and career paths globally by applying critical analysis skills to contemporary health issues and assessing the fundamental characteristics and organizational structures of the U.S. health system and the significant differences in systems in other countries.
View Transfer Options, Degrees & CertificatesStudents discuss the role of community engagement in promoting public health and social justice. They will learn of the multiple determinants of health, including sociological, economic, genetic, behavioral, environmental, and other factors that impact human health and health disparities. Students study the risk factors and modes of transmission for infectious and chronic diseases and how these diseases affect both personal and public health. They will apply the basic concepts, methods, and tools of public health data collection, use, and analysis and explain why evidence-based approaches are an essential part of public health practice.
Program Length
In consultation and cooperation with the Public Health Science programs of the California State Universities (CSUs), the AA-T in Kinesiology can be completed in four fulltime semesters. Students should work with an IVC Counselor on building their Individual Education Plan.
Transfer Options

Sociology
Sociology uses behavioral research methods to answer fundamental questions about why and how groups of people behave the way they do; from work to school to relationships with others. How social forces like culture, the economy, and social inequality are focal points of the major.
View Transfer Options, Degrees & CertificatesSociology provides an excellent foundation for work in a wide variety of fields in public and social service, law, research, health, and nearly every industry. Sociology emphasizes hidden and overlooked elements of human collective behaviors, from the most mundane social habits to world-changing protest movements. Social theories and research assists our understanding of behaviors that many casually notice but do not deeply observe, yet sociologists strive to understand and describe hidden structures that encourage some actions and prohibit others.

Political Science
Confused about American politics? Curious about globalization or why some countries are rich while others are poor? Take a course in political science and understand how governments work and the various factors that influence government behavior at the domestic and international levels.
View Transfer Options, Degrees & CertificatesStudents majoring in Political Science learn about American government, governments of other countries, international relations, and political philosophy. Since government and politics impacts nearly all aspects of our lives, it is important to learn about how government functions, the various influences on political decision-making and the role people can play in shaping their governments and societies. Students who graduate with a degree in political science can pursue a variety of careers from law, teaching, journalism, or working for governmental and non-governmental institutions like the State Department or United Nations.
Program Length
Four semesters.
Transfer Options
The program prepares students by offering lower division undergraduate courses in American government, international relations, comparative politics, and political theory. Most transfer institutions require students majoring in political science to complete these courses during the first two years of college. Students who majored in political science at IVC have transferred to all UC and CSU campuses. Students have also transferred to Columbia University, University of Michigan, Georgetown University, and other private universities.
Program Specific Support
The Student Success Center provides writing support for students taking political science courses.

Geology
Geology is the scientific study of Earth’s internal and external processes. Some areas of study include plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, minerals and rocks, paleontology and evolution, landslides and surficial weathering and erosion, groundwater and river systems, glaciers, coastal processes and changes to coastal geologic landscapes, and impacts of climate change on Earth. This is a small list of the intriguing subjects studied in geology.
Geology is a subject that incorporates the disciplines of mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics and engineering to name a few. If you wonder about how the Earth works, why the earth looks as it does, or why some areas are more susceptible to earthquakes and volcanoes then geology may be for you.
View Transfer Options, Degrees & CertificatesGeology covers a broad range of ideas that can greatly enhance you carrier options. There are a large range of careers available to students with degrees in geology. Local, state and federal government positions for example positions on state and regional water boards or the Army Corp of Engineers, petroleum and mining geologists, geophysicists and seismologists, and private positions with geotechnical engineering or environmental companies like Jacobs Engineering, URS or AECOM. Teaching positions at universities, colleges, and high schools. Research and science writing, and many more.
Program Length
While the length of time depends on your chosen interest area (hydrogeology, engineering geology, etc.) programs are generally arranged so that students can finish degrees within 2-4 years depending on the degree sought by the student.
Transfer Options
The student in this program is well prepared to transfer to geology programs around the world. Examples are: The University of California System, the California State University system, nearly any State University system, and many private colleges.
