Have you ever wondered why people do the things they do? Psychology helps us understand how the human mind works and how they behave.

View Transfer Options, Degrees & Certificates

At Irvine Valley College, our Psychology courses provide academic instruction in basic psychology concepts, theories, terminology and research methods, and promote students' life skills, personal growth and interpersonal effectiveness. Students majoring in psychology focus on understanding human personality and behavior, cognition, and emotions, as well as researching psychological issues of current concern.

The critical insight that psychology requires makes this major especially appropriate for those considering careers in any of the helping professions (such as mental health counseling, public health, and social work), teaching, or behavioral research; or for those seeking a widely applicable liberal arts background.

Program Length

This program can be completed in two years.

Sociology provides an excellent foundation for work in a wide variety of fields in public and social service, law, research, health, and nearly every industry. Sociology emphasizes hidden and overlooked elements of human collective behaviors, from the most mundane social habits to world-changing protest movements. Social theories and research assists our understanding of behaviors that many casually notice but do not deeply observe, yet sociologists strive to understand and describe hidden structures that encourage some actions and prohibit others.

Political Science

Social & Behavioral Sciences

Confused about American politics? Curious about globalization or why some countries are rich while others are poor? Take a course in political science and understand how governments work and the various factors that influence government behavior at the domestic and international levels.

View Transfer Options, Degrees & Certificates

Students majoring in Political Science learn about American government, governments of other countries, international relations, and political philosophy. Since government and politics impacts nearly all aspects of our lives, it is important to learn about how government functions, the various influences on political decision-making and the role people can play in shaping their governments and societies. Students who graduate with a degree in political science can pursue a variety of careers from law, teaching, journalism, or working for governmental and non-governmental institutions like the State Department or United Nations.

Program Length

Four semesters.

Transfer Options

The program prepares students by offering lower division undergraduate courses in American government, international relations, comparative politics, and political theory. Most transfer institutions require students majoring in political science to complete these courses during the first two years of college. Students who majored in political science at IVC have transferred to all UC and CSU campuses. Students have also transferred to Columbia University, University of Michigan, Georgetown University, and other private universities.

Program Specific Support

The Student Success Center provides writing support for students taking political science courses.

A degree in geography can help you better understand human cultures, natural environments, and how humans interact with each other and with the natural world. Geographers use knowledge and technology, working outside in the field and on computers, to help businesses, governments, and non-profits solve problems in an increasingly complex and globalizing world.

View Transfer Options, Degrees & Certificates

Jobs in the 21st century demand workers who understand the complex relationships between people, places, and environments all over the world. Geography helps us understand these relationships by examining patterns of why natural and cultural phenomena happen where they happen.

Students completing degrees in geography help governments make planning decisions, support non-profit organizations combatting environmental and humanitarian problems, aid businesses in more effectively serving their customers, and more.

Geography emphasizes learning through first-hand observation in the field and is at the forefront of important technologies like computer-based mapping and the gathering and interpretation of satellite imagery.

Program Length

Students taking 12-15 units per semester can complete a degree in geography in four semesters (plus one summer Field Studies course if desired to fulfill degree requirements; this requirement can also be fulfilled by a class taken during the Fall or Spring semesters)

Transfer Options

Many public four-year universities in California offer bachelor’s degrees in geography. Students completing associates degrees in geography can easily transfer and earn a bachelor’s degree in two more years from an institution offering geography programs, such as UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, UC Berkeley, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, San Diego State, San Francisco State, and more.

Ever wonder what makes us human?  Anthropology helps us understand all aspects of the human experience from our primate roots to the development of societies, religion, and language.

View Transfer Options, Degrees & Certificates

Anthropology is the study of the organization, behavior, and development of the human species. Anthropology focuses on the acquisition of knowledge through use of the scientific method, allowing students to explain evolutionary theory in light of the human fossil record, analyze the relationship between modern humans and non-human primates, and objectively evaluate non-western customs and beliefs.

Physical anthropology examines the fossil remains of ancestral humans and the behavior of primates in order to construct theories of how and why human beings have evolved.

Cultural anthropology is concerned with the basic structures of human cultures, particularly with regard to subsistence strategies, social organization, language, religion, and political and economic systems.

Students who major in Anthropology often have careers in social work, international affairs, teaching, politics, public health, and journalism.

Program Length

This program can be completed in two years.
