Explore and learn other languages and their cultures. Students who complete an area of study in Languages will be able to engage in basic interpersonal communication including comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Additionally, language study increases critical thinking and creativity. Students will also gain cultural insight and a global perspective. Potential careers that benefit from or require language fluency include health care, national security, tourism and hospitality, education, law enforcement and international relations. Areas of study include American Sign Language, Chinese, French, Japanese or Spanish.
The ESL/AESL program supports non-native English speakers with English language course work to help them succeed in college, at their jobs, and in the community. In the AESL Program, students earn Certificates of Competency by completing a course sequence at the beginning, intermediate, or advanced level.
IVC students, including students taking a language or ESL/AESL class, are supported by a variety of learning resources on campus. Students may seek specialized assistance at the following learning centers: Language Acquisition Center, Math Center, Adult ESL Center, Student Success Center, Writing Center, CAANAPI, and the Library. Eligibility for some services is based on current course enrollment.

Interested in improving your English skills while taking tuition free classes? Enroll in AESL courses! You will acquire the English language skills you need to advance your education or your career. By completing AESL courses, you can also earn an AESL Certificate of Competency.
View Transfer Options, Degrees & CertificatesThe AESL (Adult English as a Second Language) Program provides noncredit course work on English and American culture lessons to help students at work and school, with their family, and in society. Course work includes:
- Interviewing for a job
- Conferencing with a child's teacher
- Reviewing for the U.S. Citizenship Exam
- Filling out forms and applications
- Writing personal or professional emails
- Reading prescription labels and medication directions
- Learning about U.S. culture and government
- Improving computer skills
AESL students practice their English reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in class while learning about English grammar, pronunciation, conversation, and vocabulary. Students also learn about U.S. culture and government, and improve their computer skills by using English learning software in a computer lab one day a week.
There are five levels of core, multi-skills courses from beginning to advanced. Course offerings also include Digital Literacy, U.S. Citizenship, Conversation, Pronunciation, Grammar, and Idioms.
Certificates
The AESL program offers three certificates of competency. To earn a Certificate of Competency for each level, a student will take a year-long course sequence.
Adult English as a Second Language: Beginning Certificate of Competency Noncredit
This sequence of courses is designed to help non-native English language learners acquire basic communication skills and cultural/civic proficiencies used in everyday life situations encountered at home, at school, at work, and in the community. The program prepares students to participate in simple conversations, read and understand basic directions and texts, fill out basic forms, and write simple sentences. It also prepares students for the intermediate level program.
Complete the following courses:
- AESL Beginning Adult ESL Skill Course
- AESL 501 Beginning Adult ESL Level 1
- AESL 502 Beginning Adult ESL Level 2
Adult English as a Second Language: Intermediate Certificate of Competency Noncredit
This sequence of courses is designed to help non-native English language learners strengthen communication skills and cultural/civic proficiencies used in everyday life situations encountered at home, school, at work, and in the community. The program prepares students to engage in conversations on a variety of subjects beyond that of personal experience, read and understand texts from different genres, and write basic paragraphs. It also prepares students for the advanced level program.

- AESL 503 Intermediate Adult ESL Level 3
- AESL 504 Intermediate Adult ESL Level 4
Adult English as a Second Language: Advanced Certificate of Competency Noncredit
This sequence of courses is designed to help non-native English language learners refine communication skills and cultural/civic proficiencies used in everyday life situations they will encounter at home, school, at work, and in the community. The program prepares students to develop extended oral fluency, read and understand work-specific and simple academic texts, and write extended paragraphs. It prepares students for ESL academic credit courses and oral and written communication needs in the workplace.
Complete the following courses:
- AESL Advance Adult ESL Skills Course
- AESL 504 Intermediate Adult ESL Level 4
- AESL 505 Advanced Adult ESL Level 5
Transfer Options
Students who complete AESL classes can transfer to credit ESL, other credit courses, or to another certificate program (e.g. Accounting, Culinary Arts, Clinical/Medical, Dental).

Library & Information Science
Languages & Learning ResourcesLearn how to be an information ninja! Library and Information Science will prepare you to be a more successful student with the option of pursuing a career as an information professional.
View Transfer Options, Degrees & CertificatesIf you like finding the truth, solving puzzles, and helping people, then Library and Information Science (LIS) might be for you! LIS professionals do much more than check out books. In fact, there are multiple career paths requiring different levels of education. Students may use their coursework immediately by working as a Library Assistant or Technologist. Students wishing to pursue a career as a librarian or professor of LIS will need a Master’s in LIS. Librarians do not just work in libraries, they may also have a specialization and work in museums, law firms, hospitals, large corporations or universities. Become a library professional and help people find the information they need!
Library courses help all students obtain the essential research skills required to be successful. In particular, transfer students will be expected to be ready to conduct their own research using library databases and credible online sources.
Transfer Options
LIB 10: Introduction to Information Literacy and Research, LIB 11: Introduction to Electronic Databases and LIB 20H: Advanced Research and Information Competency are all UC and CSU transferable. Students planning to transfer to a 4-year college are highly encouraged to enroll in a library course. All transfer students will be expected to know how to conduct research and properly cite their sources. Students wishing to prepare for a career in Library and Information Science, may obtain an undergraduate degree in any discipline prior to starting graduate work for a Masters of Library and Information Science (MLIS) at an American Libraries Association (ALA) accredited university. There are a number of online programs, the largest in California is at San Jose State University’s School of Library and Information Science (SLIS). Both UCLA and USC offer in-person masters degrees in Information Science.

Languages
Languages & Learning ResourcesLearn how to comprehend and communicate in a new language while acquiring cultural knowledge that will improve your interpersonal relations and enrich your global perspective.
View Transfer Options, Degrees & CertificatesA student who majors in a language will be able to successfully comprehend and communicate with speakers of that language. Additionally, a student will acquire cultural understanding and expand their global point of view. Language study also benefits creative thought and mental flexibility. Majoring in a language increases job opportunities in many areas: education, translation and interpreting, tourism and hospitality, public health, business, sales, law enforcement, national security, international relations, among others.
Program Length
Four semesters.
Transfer Options
A student who follows this course of study will be ready to transfer to any UC, CSU, many out-of-state colleges and universities, and private institutions. IVC has transfer agreements with UCI (TAG), UCLA (TAP) and CSUs (AA-T).
Program Specific Support
A student taking a language course will have access to free in-person tutoring in Japanese, Sign Language, and Spanish, and free online tutoring in Spanish. Additionally, students may have opportunities to participate in on campus clubs and conversational groups.
